We realise that our big church building on Church Road is quite intimidating to many - plenty of us remember the feeling of going into ‘church’ for the first time! It seems crazy that people should be put off the amazing truths about Jesus Christ because of a building, so we want to make it as easy as possible for people to find out about him.
And who’s not familiar with a school? Even if you hated it Monday to Friday, it’s pretty easy to walk in on a Sunday afternoon/evening!
When most people think ‘church’, they think old musty building, hymns, and boring rituals - sort of ‘Vicar of Dibley’ without the jokes. But church, according to the bible, is the people. They meet together to help each other to keep learning about Jesus, trusting him for what he’s done for us, and to keep living for him. In the beginning, the church never had special church buildings - they just met in homes, or any space that was big enough. That’s all we’re doing at Wellfield
We’re convinced that the bible is how God speaks - he caused his truths to be written down by people over a long period of time, from many different cultures, and his ‘word’ has timeless relevance. As we read the bible, and understand it, we hear God speak to us.
Jesus is unique in history - he’s the only man who rose from the dead, never to die again (he was physically raised from the earth into heaven, in view of many people). He claimed to be God on earth, but in contrast to many nutters and con-men who’ve claimed the same, he proved he was from out of this world by his goodness, teaching, miracles, foreknowledge ... and his resurrection from the dead.
Jesus came in fulfulment of hundreds of predictions. He said he came to make it possible for people to know and follow the living God. None of us live our lives to please the God who made us (have you ever even tried?!) ... but Jesus came to die on a cross to bring forgiveness, so that when we meet God when we die, he might treat us as friends, not enemies. Why would you not want to know about that?!
